Lowering for your car
For a sportier look and improved handling
Lowering a car is a popular tuning method that brings the body closer to the road. Suspension tuning is usually achieved by installing special suspension components such as coilovers, sports suspensions, coilover springs or sports springs. There are many reasons to lower your car. Two of the most important reasons are improved driving dynamics and a sporty look.
Options for lowering a car
There are various ways to lower a car. The choice of method depends on your preferences, your vehicle type and your requirements. Here are some common options:
Lowering with coilovers
A coilover suspension allows you to customise the vehicle height. It consists of several components, such as springs, dampers and an adjustable threaded element. This is used to change the position of the suspension springs and thus raise or lower the car.
The advantage of a coilover suspension is that you can adjust the vehicle height to your own preferences or specific requirements. The depth of the vehicle can be adjusted during and after the installation of the suspension. As a rule, both the front and rear axles can be adjusted independently of each other. A coilover suspension also has numerous other advantages in terms of driving dynamics. The combination of lowering and the right damper setup ensures that the car grips the road better and can be steered more precisely.
Lowering with sports suspensions
A sports suspension consists of sports shock absorbers and lowering springs. It enables the vehicle to be lowered in a targeted manner, reducing the distance between the body and the road.
Sports suspensions are designed to optimise the handling of the car. Just like coilover suspensions, they are able to improve control in bends and reduce lateral inclination. One disadvantage is the non-adjustable lowering. With a sports suspension, the car cannot be lowered as desired. Nevertheless, sports suspensions are a popular accessory as they increase driving dynamics and give the vehicle a sporty look.
Lowering with coilover springs
Coil springs are used together with the original shock absorbers to lower the car. If the vehicle has electronic damper force adjustment, the use of coilover springs means that the car's built-in electronic damper system does not have to be deactivated. This means that you can determine the degree of lowering yourself, depending on how you like it.
These springs not only improve the appearance of the vehicle, but in most cases you also benefit from better driving behaviour. With coilover springs, you have the advantage of being able to adjust the vehicle height to your individual requirements.
Lowering with sports springs
Sports springs are another option for lowering the car. Unlike coil springs, however, sports springs are not adjustable. They are specially developed for each vehicle model and in most cases ensure an optimum balance between comfort and sportiness.
The use of sports springs not only makes the vehicle more visually appealing, but also more agile and responsive. The firmer suspension ensures better grip and reduces body roll in bends. As a result, the car can be steered more precisely and offers a sportier driving experience.
The advantages and disadvantages of lowered vehicles
Lowering not only changes the external appearance of a vehicle, but can also have a number of effects on driving behaviour. However, deciding whether or not to lower a vehicle requires careful consideration of the advantages and disadvantages associated with this change.
Advantages of a lowered car
Lowering the car offers several potential benefits, ranging from visual improvements to improved handling.
Sportier look
A lowered car often looks more dynamic and aggressive. The reduced height gives the vehicle a sportier and more eye-catching appearance that appeals to many car enthusiasts.
Better handling
By reducing the centre of gravity, the car is more stable when cornering. The reduced tipping moment enables more precise steering behaviour and improves road holding.
Improved aerodynamics
A lower vehicle profile improves aerodynamics. This can contribute to increased efficiency and even slightly improved fuel efficiency. For electric vehicles, this can lead to increased range. This can contribute to increased efficiency and even slightly improved fuel efficiency.
Increased stability
Due to the lower centre of gravity and reduced lateral inclination, a lowered car is more stable on straight roads and especially at higher speeds.
Disadvantages of lowering
Whilst a lowered car can offer many advantages, there are also potential disadvantages and challenges that should be considered:
Restriction of ground clearance
Lowering the car means it has less ground clearance, which can lead to problems on uneven roads, bumps or obstacles
Reduced suspension comfort
Lowering the vehicle too much can lead to reduced suspension comfort, which can impair driving comfort.
Difficulties when parking
Some driveways, kerbs or car parks may be more difficult to access due to the lower ground clearance.

Frequently asked questions
- How low can my car be after lowering?

- Can I simply shorten the standard springs myself?
- How much does it cost to install a lowering kit?
- Does the lowering of the vehicle have to be registered?

1. How low can my car be after lowering?
The StVZO does not specify any precise guidelines on this subject. However, the TÜV inspectors refer to VdTÜV leaflet 751.
This leaflet states that your car, together with the driver and a full tank of petrol, must be able to pass over an obstacle with a height of 110 mm without touching it. In addition, you must ensure that the dipped and main beam headlights and the indicators are at least 500 mm above the road surface in accordance with the StVZO. Furthermore, the lower edge of the front licence plate must not be less than 200 mm above the ground.
2. What should be taken into account when lowering a vehicle?
When lowering a vehicle, it is important to observe the legal regulations. These include the use of high-quality, suitable components with an ABE (general operating licence), EC approval or parts certificate. Expertise or professional help can be helpful to ensure vehicle stability, ground clearance and safety. Regular checks of brakes, suspension and alignment are recommended.
3. Can I simply shorten the standard springs myself?
We strongly advise against shortening the springs yourself in order to lower the suspension. This is not only illegal, but also a considerable safety risk for the driver and other road users. If you are interested in lowering your car, you should use high-quality suspension springs or a professionally developed suspension kit instead.
4. How much does it cost to install a lowering kit?
The cost of installing a lowering kit varies depending on the type of vehicle, the method chosen (lowering springs, coilover suspension, etc.) and the workshop. As a rule, the costs can be between 300 and 800 euros or more. It is advisable to obtain several quotes from different workshops in advance
5. Does the lowering of the vehicle have to be registered?
Yes, a vehicle lowering must be registered in accordance with the StVZO regulations. The lowering must comply with the legal requirements and must be approved/registered following a technical inspection.
6. What does it cost to register a lowering?
The cost of registering a lowering with the technical inspection organisation can vary depending on the region, vehicle type and lowering method. As a rule, the costs are between 50 and 150 euros. Additional costs may be incurred if a TÜV certificate is required. It is advisable to enquire about the exact costs in advance.
